Possible US sanctions on China for Muslim detention camps



  • Republican leaders have urged the Trump administration to impose sanctions on seven Chinese officials under the human rights based Global Magnitsky Act. It is estimated that one million people part of Muslim minority groups are being detained in Xinjiang under China’s counter-terrorism campaign. It is reported that Chinese companies involved in the surveillance and detention of the Muslims might also face sanctions.

    Human Rights Watch reports that the Muslims are being subjected to political indoctrination, mass surveillance, torture and other forms of mistreatment, in contravention of human rights law.

    China denies the allegations and Chinese media state that vocational and training centres are being used to educate and “transform the thoughts” of “religious extremists”.
