US threatens to sanction ICC for investigating Afghanistan war crimes

  • In November 2017 the Chief Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court (ICC) requested an investigation into alleged war crimes committed by members of the US armed forces and secret detention facilities in Afghanistan used by the CIA, mostly in 2003 and 2004.

The US does not recognise the legitimacy of the court. The US is not only refusing cooperation but has also threatened ICC officials with sanctions and criminal charges if they take action against Americans, as announced yesterday by Donald Trump’s Security Advisor, John Bolton. Bolton continued “We will ban its judges and prosecutors from entering the United States. We will sanction their funds in the US financial system, and we will prosecute them in the US criminal system. We will do the same for any company or state that assists an ICC investigation of Americans.”
